I laughed out loud, was frozen with dread, and cried bitter tears of loss. All human emotions are presented for you to experience. However, it has so much light and such miraculous characters. Every monstrous thing was uniquely appalling and unforgettable. This is absolutely a horror novel because of the unmistakable fear it strikes in you. It certainly would have kept me more attentive while still teaching me the lessons of unveiling evil, trusting intuition, and listening for the quiet voice that's there to guide us. As blasphemous as it may seem, there were times when I was reading this book that I wished the Bible itself was written in the same way. Each chapter had new and terrifying obstacles brought forth by ever-scheming demons. Every moment that I had this book open in front of me, I was transported to the pilgrimage in France with Thomas, Delphine, and Père Matthieu. The characters were written so well that I fell in love with them and felt their pain. It is a wondrous mix of The Lord of the Rings, The Dark Tower series, fairy tales, and the Bible. This book encapsulates horror during the plague in Medieval France, with the absence of God providing an apocalyptic experience between angels, demons, and the humans trapped in between. "An Epic Tale of Medieval Horror" perfectly sums up this dazzling novel.
